Winter claims · Escape of water

Burst pipe or leak? The first 24 hours.

Burst pipes, leaking tanks, washing machines and ceilings coming down. Here's what to do first, and how we take the claim off your hands.

The first 24 hours

  1. Stop the water.Turn the water off at the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink or where the water pipe comes into the house.
  2. Stay safe around electrics. If water has reached sockets, lights or the fuse box, don't touch them. Only switch off at the fuse box if it's dry and safe to reach. If in doubt, call an electrician.
  3. Photograph everything before you clear up.The source of the leak, stained ceilings, wet floors, furniture and belongings. Take more photos than you think you need.
  4. Keep damaged items.Don't throw anything away until it's been seen, unless it's a health risk. If it has to go, photograph it first.
  5. Stop it getting worse.Move belongings out of the way, mop up and open windows. Keep receipts for emergency repairs, plumbers and drying equipment.
  6. Call us before you agree anything with your insurer. We'll take over the claim from there and deal with your insurer for you.
