You have made a claim, the paperwork is in, and now you are waiting. Days turn into weeks, and the natural question is simple: how long does an insurance claim take in the UK? The honest answer is that it depends on the type of claim, but there are clear patterns, and knowing them helps you spot when something is going wrong.
At Sabre Assessing we act only for policyholders, never for insurers. Here is what to expect, what slows claims down and what you can do about it.
How long does an insurance claim take on average?
There is no single figure, but as a rough guide:
- Straightforward claims, such as a small theft or minor damage with clear evidence, can be settled within a few weeks.
- Medium claims, such as an escape of water or storm damage, commonly take a few months, because they involve inspections, quotes and repairs.
- Complex claims, such as major fires, floods or subsidence, can take many months or longer, as the cause has to be investigated and the property repaired.
These are general patterns rather than promises, and every claim is different.
The stages of a claim, and where time goes
- Notification. You tell the insurer what has happened. The sooner you do this, the sooner the claim starts.
- Acknowledgement and assessment. The insurer may appoint a loss adjuster to inspect the damage and look at cause and cover.
- Evidence and quotes. You provide photos, receipts and repair estimates. Gaps here cause the most delays.
- Decision. The insurer accepts, partly accepts or rejects the claim.
- Settlement. The insurer pays you, or arranges the repairs.
- Repairs and completion. Work is done and, if needed, further costs are agreed.
Why do some claims take so long?
- Missing evidence. Every request for more information restarts the clock.
- Disputes over cause or cover. If the insurer questions what caused the damage, expert reports are needed.
- Insurer workload. After a storm or flood, thousands of claims arrive at once.
- Low settlement offers. Arguing a figure can add weeks, but accepting too little is worse.
- Drying and repairs. After flooding or escape of water, buildings may need time to dry before work begins.
What does the law say?
Insurers have a legal duty to handle claims fairly and to pay valid claims within a reasonable time. What counts as reasonable depends on the claim. They also have to follow the Financial Conduct Authority’s rules on treating customers fairly. If your insurer is dragging its feet, you are entitled to complain.
How to speed up your claim
- Report the loss immediately, with as much detail as you can.
- Take photos and video before anything is moved or repaired.
- Keep every receipt for emergency repairs and extra costs.
- Reply quickly to every request, and keep copies of everything you send.
- Keep a log of calls, dates and names.
- Ask for a named contact and a timetable.

What if the insurer is taking too long?
Start by writing to the insurer, set out the timeline and ask for a specific date for a decision. If that does not work, make a formal complaint. If you are unhappy with the final response, or have not had one after eight weeks, you can take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service for free. A loss assessor can also take over the dealings and keep the pressure on.
Do loss assessors make claims faster?
Often, yes. A loss assessor presents the claim properly from day one, chases the insurer and deals with the technical points that cause delays. Our page on how to choose a loss assessor explains what to look for.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a home insurance claim take?
Simple claims can take weeks. Larger claims, such as fire or flood, can take months.
Can an insurer delay my claim indefinitely?
No. They must handle it fairly and pay valid claims within a reasonable time.
Should I accept the first offer?
Not without checking it. Early offers may not cover the full cost of repairs or contents.
Do I need a loss assessor?
You do not have to have one, but they can save time and often improve the outcome on larger claims.
