Flooded home or business? The first 24 hours.
River, surface water and flash flooding. Here's what to do first, and how we take the claim off your hands.
The first 24 hours
- Put safety first. If water is still rising, follow advice from the emergency services. Don't walk or drive through floodwater.
- Leave the electrics alone.Don't use sockets or appliances that have been in water until they've been checked by an electrician.
- Photograph and video the damage.Record the water level and every affected room before you start cleaning up, and note the date and time.
- Keep damaged items and samples.Keep things like damaged carpet and furniture until they've been seen. If they must go, photograph them first.
- Protect yourself while you clear up.Floodwater can be contaminated, so wear gloves and boots. Keep receipts for cleaning, drying and somewhere to stay.
- Call us before you agree anything with your insurer. We'll take over the claim and deal with your insurer and their loss adjuster for you.
